Blues and jazz history
Jazz and blues guitar developed in the early 20th century, based on African American traditions that expressed deep feeling and rhythmic sophistication. Blues added raw emotion through note bending and 12-bar structures, while jazz added rich harmonies and improvisation, led by innovators such as Robert Johnson, Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt. While blues electrified in Chicago and jazz grew up in seedy clubs, the two forms frequently blended—blues lending jazz its emotional depth, and jazz lending blues its polish. Guitarists such as B.B. King and Wes Montgomery defined the sound with soulful phrasing and ornate runs. Today, their hybrid lives on from the soulful rock solo to the sophisticated jazz improvisation — timeless, emotional, and constantly changing.
